In this third webinar in the IDA-GA/TRL-GA 2026 Spotlight on Structured Literacy series, Dr. Charles Haynes presents how writing and comprehension are interconnected.

Description: Writing and comprehension are deeply interconnected processes that can be strengthened through systematic instruction at the word, sentence, micro-discourse, and text levels. This session provides teachers and specialists with practical, hands-on strategies to support oral and written language across these levels. After a brief overview of key research and theory, the focus shifts quickly to ready-to-use classroom, small-group, and one-on-one techniques. Participants will also receive handouts, including teacher-friendly articles authored by Dr. Haynes.

Dr. Charles Haynes, Ed.D., Professor Emeritus at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, is a pioneer in language-based curricula for children with dyslexia and expressive language challenges. His cross-linguistic research spans English, Japanese, Arabic, and Portuguese, and he authored From Talking to Writing: Strategies for Supporting Narrative and Expository Expression (2018). He has been honored by the International Dyslexia Association with both the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award and the Legacy Award for his enduring contributions to the field of dyslexia and related language learning disabilities.
