This presentation by Ms. Marilyn Zecher, M.A., CALT, (via Zoom) will offer some ideas about why some students struggle with mathematics from a diagnostic perspective. We will define and examine the core deficit in mathematics before we examine typical concepts in math which prove challenging for many students but particularly for those with language-based learning disabilities. Language difficulties such as dyslexia can have a profound impact on learning math. We also will look at some evidence-based recommendations from national sources which help us craft viable instructional strategies and avoid student math anxiety. Finally, we will introduce supports – both input and output accommodations – which help students succeed.
