Announcing WestEd Research Participation Opportunities for Schools
3/17/2023

My name is Analuisa Flores, Administrative Assistant at WestEd, and I am emailing to share information about two research opportunities which are currently recruiting. Neither of these projects are products for sale – participation does NOT involve the purchasing of additional curriculum or materials – and both studies are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Both studies are totally free for districts, and participating teachers will receive stipends for their time.

The first opportunity, Knowledge Acquisition Transformation Expansion (KATE), is a literacy supplement focusing on reading comprehension for 4th and 5th graders. WestEd is working with researchers at Texas A&M University to expand the use of their evidence-based reading comprehension program. KATE consists of practice-based professional development for teachers, teacher-led reading comprehension instruction, and a web-based tutoring platform to improve both instruction and comprehension. The program can be used with any texts and or curriculum currently in use, and four previous studies of this program have already found a strong, positive impact on students who have used it. The study website can be found here. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE KATE INFORMATIONAL FLYER.

The second opportunity, Promoting Adolescents’ Comprehension of Text (PACT), is a 6th – 9th grade social studies program that uses evidence-based social studies and literacy teaching strategies to improve students’ content knowledge, literacy, and academic language. PACT is specifically focused on three units in American history curriculum (Colonial America, Road to Revolution, and Revolutionary War) and can be used with existing standards and curriculum. The study website can be found here.  CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE PACT-L INFORMATIONAL FLYER.

We also host a virtual information session for these projects every other Thursday from 1-2 pm EST (10-11 am PT). This is a great opportunity for potential participants to hear more about these opportunities.
