#1 March 4 Structured Literacy for English Learners Webinar Series

There are more than 50 million students attending public schools in the United States and approximately 5.3 million of these students are English learners. A vast majority of these students can benefit from increasing their oral language skills in the heritage and/or second language. English learners require extensive vocabulary knowledge which can contribute to increasing their oral language skills, reading comprehension and written expression. This session will describe the connections of language to literacy. Participants will also learn how to deliver explicit and systematic oral language and vocabulary instruction. Multimodality lessons will be modeled and practiced. There is no fee for this session. Register HERE. |

#2 March 19 Literacy Foundations for English Learners: What Every Educator Should Know
Literacy foundations include both decoding and language comprehension skills. We know that Structured Literacy is a term that describes a comprehensive and evidence-based approach for literacy instruction that can lead to successful decoding and reading comprehension. Structured Literacy includes foundational skills of reading and writing in addition to the development of oral language and comprehension in an explicit and systematic manner. Evidence-based practices that are necessary for the successful development of literacy among students who are learning English as an additional language will be described. A demonstration of effective literacy instruction that is culturally and linguistically responsive and builds upon first language and literacy knowledge for the development of second language literacy will be modeled and practiced. Participants will learn how to address cross-linguistic features into every lesson and thus implement an asset-based approach to instruction. There is no fee for this session. Register HERE. |

#3 April 8 Reading Comprehension and Written Language Essentials for English Learners
Reading comprehension and written language composition are some of the highest levels of language. English learners must have adequate background knowledge, vocabulary and text structure awareness for deep understanding and use of print as they acquire second language literacy. They must also have the ability to write grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs in order to compose written text. This session will describe evidence-based strategies for the development of reading comprehension and written language that is culturally and linguistically responsive to students’ needs. Lessons will be modeled and practiced. There is no fee for this session. Register HERE. |
