Georgia DOE Dyslexia Handbook and Video Series

Dyslexia Informational Handbook for Local School Systems

Watch the recording of the first webinar in the IDA-GA and Parent to Parent of Georgia Series for Parents: A Walk Through Georgia’s Dyslexia Informational Handbook. This webianr aired live 9/11/2025 at 7:00 pm. Details and recording:  https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/event/a-walk-through-ga-dyslexia-handbook/

Note from Guest Missy Purcell following the event:  I recently joined IDA GA: International Dyslexia Association Georgia Branch for a webinar to unpack the Georgia Dyslexia Handbook. We dove into both the history of how we got here and the key updates from the latest legislation, HB 307. The new Dyslexia Handbook is truly a game-changer—it’s packed with resources, charts, and checklists to help you advocate for your child at the local school level. Even better, the digital version links directly to tools you can use right away.

This handbook is now law. It gives parents and advocates the foundation needed to push for early identification of dyslexia, evidence-based interventions aligned with the science of reading, district accountability to ensure every child has access to the supports they need. This is about ensuring every student in Georgia has the opportunity to become a proficient reader.

I’d love to hear your feedback! If you’ve read the handbook or had experiences navigating dyslexia advocacy in your district, please share in the comments or reach out directly at hello@misspurcell.com. I’m here to listen, support, and stand beside you in this fight for our kids’ education. Together, let’s make sure the law is not just words on paper, but a tool for lasting change.

7/8/25  “Per HB 307 and GaDOE’s HB307 Reporting Requirements, GaDOE has until July 15th to distribute the Handbook to systems/schools. Then, systems/schools have until August 1st to certify that they distributed the handbook to each educator in the school district.”

HOT OFF THE PRESSES! 📘The revised July 2025 Dyslexia Informational Handbook is now available!

🔹 What’s new?
This updated edition reflects the Georgia Early Literacy and Dyslexia Act (House Bill 307), signed into law in April 2025. HB 307 merges and clarifies previous laws, including Senate Bill 48 (2019) and the Georgia Early Literacy Act (HB 538, 2023).

📚 Educators are strongly encouraged to read the handbook in its entirety to understand current requirements related to literacy and dyslexia. Schools should begin reviewing practices to ensure alignment with the new legislation.
