• Georgia is currently experiencing a unique synergy around literacy with several developments that have impacted literacy policy and practice statewide. This webpage is designed to keep stakeholders up to date on literacy policy and practice in Georgia. We expect more updates by in May and June of 2024.
• Georgia Reading and Dyslexia Screening Process: This flowchart incorporates SB 48 requirements and HB 538 requirements. All components must be implemented with fidelity. 

Matt Carter, PhD, CCC-SLP joined the IDA-GA Board in January 2024. Dr. Carter is a Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Valdosta State University and the Program Director of the Scottish-Rite Literacy Program at Valdosta State University. He is an enthusiastic supporter of the dyslexia community and focuses on a multi-pronged approach to improving literacy abilities throughout Georgia and beyond. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Georgia Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and currently serves on the conference committee. In addition to maintaining an active teaching load, research agenda, and publication record, Dr. Carter has a successful track record at obtaining grant funding for various literacy-based projects, and he regularly presents at state-wide and national conferences. Dr. Carter’s most enthusiastic literacy-related activity is the overseeing of the Scottish-Rite Literacy Program. This program provides 100% free screenings, evaluations, treatment, and consultation to individuals of all ages who are experiencing difficulties with literacy. When he is not actively engaged in literacy-related activities, you can often find him at a baseball field with one of his six children and with his wonderful wife, Melissa. 

Janet Street, M.Ed., serves on the board of the Georgia Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. Janet has worked with dyslexic learners at The Schenck School for 23 years. She has held many positions, including Lead Teacher, Director of Student Services, and Director of Outplacement.  She is now the Director of Teacher Training at ReadSource, the outreach arm of Schenck. As a Fellow with the Orton Gillingham Academy, she has taught hundreds of parents, tutors, and teachers how to use the Orton-Gillingham approach to help students learn to read and spell. She is the proud daughter, sister, and mother of talented and successful family members with dyslexia.
